SKY planned EPG shuffle has occurred

by
Sky have now completed the promised Electronic Program Guide reshuffle. It occurred at around 05:30 this morning. Although the seven-category split was more than sufficient when Sky launched its digital service in 1998, the number of channels has exploded in recent years. As a result, an increasing number of channels have been launched into inappropriate categories - particularly in the 'entertainment' section - while an even larger number have found themselves hidden away in the depths of the guide. "These enhancements are designed to improve navigability for viewers and to assist Sky to meet continued demand for EPG slots," said a Sky spokesperson. "Better signposting will help make it easier for viewers to find the programme and channels that they want to watch." A full list of the new channel lineup can be found on the forum. <More>

Humax launches HD receiver

by
Humax have unveiled a satellite receiver for both FTA and subscription HD channels. At the moment there are only a few free 'test' channels, but by the summer there exists the possibility of watching the World Cup in HD broadcast by the BBC and other providers! It has long been rumoured that many broadcasters will use the World Cup to showcase the new technology. Some subscription services have already confirmed their intentions.According to Humax the HDCI2000, which will retail for £300 when it debuts in March can receive and decrypt the latest MPEG4 HD transmissions, as well as display both MPEG2 HD and standard definition, free-to-air satellite signals. Specification: Optical output for Dolby Digital sound; two scarts to connect additional home cinema devices; a data port for software updates and a HDMI video output. There are also two common interface slots, allowing future expansion into Pay TV services when they become available. The receiver will NOT be suitable for receiving the new upcoming Sky HD transmissions in the UK.

Irdeto buys CryptoWorks

by
Marking a possible wave of consolidation in the conditional access (CA) sector, Irdeto has inked a deal to take over CryptoTec, the CA division of Philips Electronics. Financial terms were not disclosed, but Irdeto, a security firm based in The Netherlands, said it will assume the operations of the Philips unit, maker of the CryptoWorks smartcard and other content protection systems for cable, satellite, terrestrial and IPTV platforms. That will fit into Irdeto's line of CA products, which include smartcards and software-based CA systems for traditional and mobile TV services. "The conditional access industry is moving toward consolidation, and Philips has been looking into various options for the CryptoTec business," said Philips Digital Networks CEO Hans Streng, noting that Philips will continue to focus on "open standards" digital rights management technology. With CryptoWorks in the fold, Irdeto said it will have a total of 300 CA customers worldwide, a number that includes 100 customers from Philips alone, according to Vamsi Sistla, director of broadband and digital home/media for ABI Research. Although CrypoWorks is not a "prized entity," it does represent some "low-hanging fruit" for Irdeto, which grapples in the global CA and DRM sector primarily with NDS Grup and Nagravision, Sistla noted. The deal "is a pinch hit, in my viewpoint," he said. Although Irdeto and Philips have scored market share globally, their presence in North America has been a non-factor. There, at least on the cable front, the CA sector is dominated by Motorola Inc. and Scientific-Atlanta. That could change, however, as cable operators move ahead on downloadable conditional access (DCAS) technologies.Source: cedmagazine.com

Spainsat & Hotbird TM 7a integrated

by
The two satellites for Arianespace's upcoming dual-payload Ariane 5 ECA mission are now being integrated with the launcher hardware in separate operations at Europe's Spaceport. These two photos highlight the activity as preparations continue on track for the February 21 liftoff.Eutelsat's HOT BIRD TM 7a is positioned on the cone-shaped adapter that provides the interface between the spacecraft and its Ariane 5. This integration took place in the S5B high-bay area of the Spaceport's S5 payload preparation facility. Built by Alcatel Alenia Space in Cannes, France, HOT BIRD 7a will have a mass at liftoff of 4,100 kg and will perform television and radio broadcast relay duties from its orbital position at 13 deg. East over Gabon.SPAINSAT is lowered into place on the SYLDA 5 dispenser system, which allows Ariane 5 to carry two satellites on a single mission. In the final payload "stack," SPAINSAT and the SYLDA 5 will be installed atop HOT BIRD 7a on the Ariane 5. During flight, SPAINSAT will be deployed first, followed by the separation of SYLDA 5. The mission will be completed with the release of HOT BIRD 7a. SPAINSAT was built by U.S. manufacturer Space Systems/Loral in California, and will be operated by Hisdesat for government telecommunications. Weighing in at 3,683 kg for liftoff, the spacecraft will be positioned at an orbital slot of 30 deg. West, which places it over the Atlantic Ocean.

FilmFour drops subscription

by
Channel 4 severed its last link with conventional pay TV yesterday by moving FilmFour on to the Freeview service. In July it will join Channel 4, E4, E4+1 and More4 on the free-to-air digital service that sits in more than 5 million homes. Andy Duncan, chief executive of Channel 4, said the move reflected the broadcaster's strategy of getting its channels into as many households as possible. He added that there were economic reasons for cancelling FilmFour's subscription service, which had 320,000 customers paying a total of £2.2m a year.FilmFour has also announced that it will go free on satellite, although it isn't clear if that means Free To Air or Free To View.Source: Guardian

Hot Bird 7a TM and Spainsat fuelling

by
The heavy-lift Ariane 5 moves to the Spaceport's Final Assembly BuildingArianespace's first Ariane 5 launch campaign for 2006 has entered a new phase with the vehicle's transfer to the Final Assembly Building, where it will be fitted with the mission's dual-satellite payload. The transfer from the Launcher Integration Building - where the Ariane 5 underwent its initial buildup - to the final assembly facility occurred on Saturday. Installed on its mobile launch table, the Ariane 5 was rolled out on the dual rail track that interconnects the major elements of the ELA-3 launch complex at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana. With the Ariane 5 now in the Final Assembly Building, all is set for the integration of its two satellite passengers - Hisdesat's SPAINSAT governmental X-band telecommunications satellite for the Spanish Defense Ministry, and Eutelsat's HOT BIRD TM 7A spacecraft for the broadcast of television and radio programming to cable distribution systems and homes. The upcoming mission is set for February 21, and will use the Ariane 5 ECA heavy-lift launcher version.
