More Americans watching TV – but is it HDTV?
by Brian Turner
It’s time to get the party started, and it’s happening right in front of the HDTV.
Research is showing that more Americans are choosing to stay at home and enjoy their entertainment options than just two years ago. Most of those staying at home have upgraded their traditional sets to the new technology of high definition. The purchase of larger widescreen sets has turned the average television viewing session into a weekly social event.
With the costs of the HDTV sets plummeting and with the average screen size growing, it is likely that the “viewing parties” will also continue to increase. Retailers are finding that more and more average consumers are migrating to the larger widescreens, partly for the status that the sets have and partly for the entertainment options that the sets offer.
The age of these stay at home partiers seems to sit in the young-middle-age range. The younger generations still prefer to find their entertainment outside of the home.
Flat panel LCD and plasma television sets have dropped in price about 25 percent in the last year. The lowering prices mean more consumers can afford the technology and the larger screens.
American couch potatoes, long condemned for their lack of activity, now have even more excuses for sitting around. The average American set has grown about 1 inch per year, matching the growth in the average couch potato.
