The contract for construction of the NBN has not yet been awarded, but the Infocomm Development Authority – who regulates the industry – expects the project to be completed in just five short years.

MI is looking for a way to cut costs for the end users. Traditionally, competition in the Pay TV operators means that broadcasters can charge a premium for the acquisitions of the programs they have to offer. This price is usually passed down to the subscriber who pays more for premium channels.

MI has a goal for when it enters the IPTV market. It wants to have a system in place that will allow consumers to have access with content providers directly. It’s a new concept that is unused at present, but it is expected to be the norm in just five to ten years (about the time that the NBN will be completed).

SingTel was awarded Singapore’s first IPTV license. MI understands that with SingTel moving into the IPTV market, it has to find a way to stand as the sole pure-play mobile operation in an industry that is turning to bundling.

MI’s cash cow has been voice services. Diversifying into IPTV would secure its position in the internet industry. Instead of competing head to head, MI is looking to find its niche.
