VOIP – Gone Phishing
by Kathryn Lang
If it’s not one thing then it’s another. VOIP is being attacked through a Phishing scheme. For me, the most interesting point of this recent attack it the victims. It seems that Bank of America customers are being targeted. I can’t help but wonder if all the negative publicity that the bank has received lately contributed to its customers being targeted.
This VOIP attack is sending official looking emails to Bank of America customers asking them to dial a toll free number. The email claims there is a problem with the customer’s account. Once the victim dials the number, there is a prompt for an account number and secret password. If this information is entered, the bad guys have all they need to clean out the account.
If you receive a request for personal information – either over the internet or through the mail – you should call your bank directly. Never use the number that has been “provided for your convenience.” Criminals are getting more creative everyday in the ways they steal your personal information and ultimately your money.
It is likely that criminal attacks based around or against VOIP will only continue to escalate in the future months. The best way to ensure that you are not a victim is to secure your system and inquire about the security measures your provider has in place.
