Idaho, US-based Micron Technology, launched an 8 megapixel camera image sensor at the Photo Marketing Association trade show in Las Vegas.
The sensor is based on CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) technology, which is commonly used to make computer processors, as opposed to CCD (charge-coupled device) technology-based sensors which are used in most consumer cameras.
CMOS sensors are more commonly used in mobile phone cameras and video cameras, rather than still-cameras.
Micron has chosen CMOS technology for its ease of integration with some camera electronics, its ability to support high-definition video with only modest power consumption and its ability to respond quickly for good burst-mode camera performance.
Micron’s 8-megapixel image sensor is priced at $15 for 100,000 units.
