HDTV – Bigger Is Not Always Better
by Kathryn Lang
Bigger does not necessarily mean better, especially when you are talking about HDTV sets. Consumers that are searching for that ultimate in television experience are often disappointed with the picture quality that they bring home. There is a good reason.
HDTV is limited by the formatting that it receives. With bigger sets, the number of given lines just gets spread farther apart. To get the best picture, you have to understand the resolution code.
For a new 720p HDTV, a 40 inch screen will offer about the same vertical resolution that a good 24 inch SDTV offered. Anything bigger and the picture will most likely start to blur.
If a bigger HDTV set is what you are interested in, then the higher resolution is a must. Look for something with at least a 1080i resolution. Even with this format, the break-even point (where the picture quality will match that of your old set) is only about 60 inches.
When you are upgrading your television viewing experience with a new HDTV set, keep in mind that the picture is only as good as the format. It will be a much better value to buy a smaller screen with a higher resolution. The viewing experience will also prove to be one that you can get excited about as well.
