Dell drops Axim PDA range

Dell has withdrawn the latest Axim X51 product family from direct sale and has no plans for a successor.

The Axim X51 has been removed from Dell.com, although a number of third-party handhelds, including GPS devices and unlocked smartphones from leading manufacturers that feature the latest technology are available.

Dell is continuing to provide technical and warranty support for Axim and Dell-branded Axim peripherals in line with the terms of customers’ support agreements and product warranties.

The move is inline with the ongoing erosion of the unconnected handheld market as more people move over to either smartphones, which provide PDA functionality with the added advantage of built in telephony, or to PDAs with cellular connections.

The handheld market declined 33% worldwide in 2006.
