According to a new report from Infonetics Research – “IPTV (News – Alert) Equipment, Services, Subscribers, and Capex” – global IPTV equipment revenue reached $423.9 million in the first quarter of 2007.

Worldwide IPTV equipment manufacturer revenue increased by 153% in 2006 to over $1 billion.

Although the rate of growth in the IPTV equipment market is expected to slow, it is anticipated that most categories will at least double or triple between 2006 and 2010.

The report found that hybrid over-the-air (DTT)/IPTV architecture is gaining in popularity in Europe and Asia.

However, issues that have hindered the deployment of IPTV will have to be overcome before the technology becomes mainstream.

These include access network bandwidth, QoE, and middleware scalability issues.

The research found that global revenue from pure IP set-top boxes (STBs) increased by 15% in 1Q07.

Pure IPTV service revenue increased by 178% and hybrid IPTV/over-the-air service revenue increased by 268% in 2006.

The number of pure IPTV subscribers in the world reached 7.3 million and the number of hybrid IPTV/over-the-air subscribers hit 1.6 million in 2006.
