HD Photo standard considered by JPEG

The Joint Photographic Expert Group (JPEG), the leading standards organisation for image compression technologies, has submitted to its national body members, a new project which would lead to the standardisation of Microsoft’s HD Photo file format if formally approved.

Standardisation of HD Photo, provisionally titled JPEG XR, would allow camera, printer, display and software companies to develop products compatible with the new standard, ensuring interoperability across their properties.

Microsoft’s HD Photo image-coding technology promises a number of benefits.

It will provide better image fidelity as it preserves the entire original image content. It also allows high-quality exposure and colour adjustments in the image.

The standard’s higher image-compression efficiency will allow faster wireless uploads, with reduced drainage on batteries.

Its enhanced dynamic range will help improve photographs taken in low-light conditions. This will be of particular benefit to mobile phone users who do not have flash available.

If JPEG XR is formally approved, it would be the second part of a larger scope of work item called JPEG Systems.

The ballot deadline for the new project is October 2007 and finalising and publishing the completed standard could be completed by October 2008.
