Hong Kong telco PCCW is planning to launch the first HD broadcasts for its IPTV service on 11 August.
The first high-definition content to be broadcast by PCCW’s “now TV” IPTV service will include live sporting events such as Premier League soccer and lifestyle programmes from VOOM.
PCCW has secured a three-year contract for Premier League matches.
Further high-definition content will be added later in 2007, including 38 Italian Serie a matches, 31 UEFA Euro games, and the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
To receive the HD service, PCCW customers must purchase a new set-top box, priced at around $67. There is also a rental fee for the HD box of around $4.86 a month. The HD Sports package costs a further $8.69.
PCCW offers low-cost TV screens as part of its service packages, as part of the company’s strategy to accelerate the take-up of HD.
“now TV” is the world’s largest IPTV service with 758,000 subscribers at the end of 2006.
