IPTV service investment by Smart Telecom

Smart Telecom, an Irish telecom service provider. is investing €2.5m in improving its IPTV service in a bid to capture market share for its triple play service. The investment in Smart's IPTV will allow the telecom company to offer digital services of over 100 television and radio channels to 550,000 homes in Ireland.

The investment is aimed at aiding the firm in developing market share for its 'triple play' package of television, broadband and telephone services. Smart plans to introduce its triple play service in November 2007, when it will initially be offered to the firm's existing 15,000 residential customers.

It is estimated that the triple play market in Europe is expected to be worth €1bn in 2007 yet is still in its absolute infancy in Ireland. This deal puts Smart Telecom at the cutting edge of interactive and integrated television services in Ireland.

Based on figures by analysts Screen Digest, Smart Telecom expects the European IPTV market to double in subscriptions from 2.9 million in 2006 to 5.6 million during 2007.

Smart, which has been offering IPTV services since 2004, plans to offer the new triple play package to the wider market early next year.
