According the The Times’ world event blog, Microsoft and the BBC are in discussions prior to the launch of Microsoft’s digital television and video service in Europe.
Microsoft plans to offer films, TV shows and high-definition programmes over its Xbox 360 video-games machine. The software company already offers video content in America via the console and has content deals in place with major studios and TV networks, including CBS, Disney, Fox, MTV, Paramount and Warner.
Users can download video content from the internet onto their Xbox 360 consoles. The console can also play high-definition video when linked to a HDTV set.
It isn’t clear whether the deal with the BBC would enable downloads via the upcoming Video Marketplace, or whether they form part of longer-term IPTV plans. It is likely to include flagship BBC shows such as Planet Earth.
Microsoft is also in discussions with other European media companies.
