Channel 4 to launch HDTV service in December

Channel 4 will be the first terrestrial broadcaster to provide a high-definition simulcast of its main channel. The service will be launched in December on Sky HD, and will be free of charge.

Following the announcement, Rod Henwood, Channel 4’s New Media Director, said “Channel 4’s aim is to offer our viewers maximum flexibility in accessing our high quality programmes and content at a time and in the format of their choosing. HD is a fast growing consumer technology and we believe our viewers will welcome the opportunity to watch their favourite Channel 4 shows in high definition.”

As no Freeview HD service is yet available, only subscribers to Virgin’s V+ or Sky’s HD service will be able to view Channel 4’s HD channel.

ITV recently announced that it will launch an HD version of its ITV1 channel this spring, along with its Freesat digital satellite joint venture with the BBC.

The BBC’s HD plans were approved by media regulator Ofcom this week, although the plans will now have to be reviewed by the BBC Trust.
