Broadcasters miss-out on online revenues

According to new research from Vividas, a UK developer of video streaming solutions, broadcasters are missing-out on online revenue opportunities and are uncertain on how to use digital content to generate revenues.

While most of the broadcasters surveyed were investigating online advertising models, only 7% considered Pay Per View (PPV) as a way of gaining revenue.

Although 95% of the broadcasters surveyed were confident that online video content would be successful, only 43% currently offer online video. A further third are planning to offer online video by 2009.

Video on Demand (VoD) usage is expected to roughly double year-on-year in Western Europe, with global VoD revenues expected to reach US$ 888.5mn by 2009.

Respondents to the survey suggested subscription, VoD rental and download-to-own as possible ways of generating revenue from digital content.

According to the research, 40% of broadcasters are confident that live sporting streams will be the main source of online revue, while 30% believe repeat episodes of soaps online will be the main revenue generator.
