Truphone demos VoIP for iPhone

At the DEMOfall07 emerging-technology conference in Munich, UK-based VoIP company, Truphone, demonstrated how iPhone’s Wi-Fi capability can be used to make calls over Truphone’s VoIP network.

Truphone revealed how calls can be made from an iPhone handset and then routed to Truphone’s server via Wi-Fi. The company pointed out that this was not intended as a commercial launch of the technology, which is still under development.

Truphone’s program does not hack into the iPhone’s SIM card, and should not cause the problems that iPhone users have experienced recently with the unauthorised iPhone unlocking software available on the internet.

This unauthorised software has caused permanent damage to many iPhones, when users installed Apple’s 1.1.1 update.

As well as demonstrating iPhone over VOIP, Truphone revealed software which allows people to call each other through Facebook, the popular social networking site.

The software, which is still in an early stage of development, allows Facebook users to embed a “call me” button into their Facebook profiles. This enables friends to call them without revealing their actual number over the Internet.

The application allows Facebook users to contact friends who use both VoIP and PSTN networks.
