Media group demands details of Kent IPTV service

Media company, the Kent Messenger Group, has asked the Information Commissioner to order Kent County Council to disclose details about its newly launched IPTV service, Kent TV.

The £1.4m Kent TV service is run by Bob Geldof’s digital media company, Ten Alps Communications. The service claims to be independent.

A request from Kent Media Group’s political editor, Paul Francis, for details about Kent TV, was turned down by the council, because the tender process was underway.

A second request, submitted when the tender process was completed, was also turned down.

The council argued that details from an independent feasibility study were commercially sensitive and that it was considering selling the information to other councils who might be planning a similar service.

Francis has now submitted a second appeal to the Information Commissioner for details about the study.

He claims that Kent TV failed to give business risks involved in the venture the correct emphasis.

Although the council believes the station could become self-financing through advertising revenue, Francis argues that no independent assessment or evaluation of those claims has been put into the public domain.
