Cypress Semiconductor has announced the smallest available, high-speed, USB 2.0 transceiver – the MoBL-USB TX3LP18.
The transceiver measures just 2.2mm x 1.8mm, 20 percent smaller than its nearest competitor, and is offered in a 20-pin wafer level chip scale package (WLCSP).
The device also offers a high level of power-efficiency with a 0.5 uA nominal sleep mode.
This provides prolonged battery-life for a wide range of portable applications, including mobile phones, PDAs, PMPs, and GPS units.
The transceiver is compliant with the UTMI (USB 2.0 Transceiver Macrocell Interface) + Low-Pin Interface (ULPI) standard.
The small size of the device, together with the integration of multiple passive components, enables the further miniaturisation of end systems.
The transceiver eliminates the need for a dedicated 3.3V power supply with a wide input supply voltage range from 3V to 5.8V.
It also features an integrated Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) to supply USB clocking requirements without a dedicated crystal.
