Partnership to deliver IPTV in India

Reliance Communications and the Microsoft Corporation have formed a strategic partnership to provide IPTV services in India. Rcom will pay $500m to Microsoft as a licence fee. The Mumbai-based telecom will spend a further $500m to set up the necessary IPTV infrastructure.

IPTV is in an early stage in India, and the two companies have been working on the IPTV platform since 2003.

Rcom will use its nationwide infrastructure to deliver TV services, including video-on-demand, digital video recording, instant channel changing and personal media sharing. The IPTV service has been tested at more than 20,000 households in Mumbai and Delhi.

It is planned to deliver the services in the top 30 cities and in a few leading metros by early 2008, and the remaining cities and towns will follow in a phased manner. Content will be sourced from most of the leading providers.
