Viewers want more standard Freeview channels

by Lin Freestone

In a recent survey, Ofcom questioned 1,000 people to find out what was preferred amongst several options. The options were extra standard definition Freeview channels, local television, high definition, wireless home networks, better mobile phone and mobile broadband services and mobile television.

The response indicated that more Freeview channels and better mobile and mobile broadband services were preferred. They were both rated seven out of ten for their value, compared to 6.5 and 5.1 for HD and mobile TV respectively

When asked to say what they would go without, 37% of the people questioned said more high-definition channels, and 69% said mobile television. Only 20% would be prepared to go without mobile coverage/broadband and 21% standard Freeview.

Ofcom will consider the results along with technical research, evidence from stakeholders, economics and academic studies on social value. The research results will be used when deciding what to do with empty spectrum created by the digital switchover in its Digital Dividend Review.

The independent regulator will publish a further statement on the future for the digital dividend by the end of the year.
