Virgin Media to delay its IPTV plans

by Lin Freestone

It is speculated that Virgin Media has scaled back plans to make its television services available over Cable and Wireless copper via IPTV in areas outside its addressable area.

Virgin had been planning to offer linear and on-demand content on a service broadly comparable to its TV proposition on cable to households not cabled by the operator.

The first phase of the off-net plan has already launched an offer of a Virgin-branded digital terrestrial set top box. Subsequent phases would have added an IPTV-capable box.

The delivery of the IPTV service has been delayed until at least 2009.

Virgin is to concentrate on improving its cable broadband proposition instead of focusing on competing with Sky in the premium television market
