Google experiments with new search interface

by Janet Harris

Google is testing a new Web search interface which allows users to indicate if particular results are suitable, influencing the results that will be generated by a subsequent search.

The test is featured on Google Experimental Labs. If a user clicks on a blue up arrow icon to the right of the result, the item is moved to the top of the page.

Clicking on an orange asterisk marks the result so it is clearly visible in the list, while clicking on a blue ‘X’ icon deletes the result and keeps it hidden when the same keywords are used in future searches.

Users can also provide URLs for pages relevant to a particular keyword search. Next time the search is run, the URL appears at top of the page, marked with an orange asterisk.

The test is available only to a limited number of people.
