VoIP start-up, Jaxtr, has increased its number of registered users from 500,000 to 5 million since July.

The company claims it is the fastest growing internet communications service in history, beating Skype, Hotmail, and ICQ.

Jaxtr is hiring Taneli Otala as its vice president of engineering, in order to keep pace with the services phenomenal growth.

Mr Otala led the technology team at both MySQL, and Various, the owner of AdultFriendFinder.com. He will address system problems presented by the service’s current growth rate.

Jaxtr connects ordinary landline and mobile phones over the Internet, using e-mail addresses to identify callers. An internet or Wi-Fi enable phone isn’t required to use the service, and there is no software to download.

When a customer registers with Jaxtr they receive a link. Contacts simply click on the link to call a Jaxtr member, and enter their own number. When the Jaxtr member picks up the phone, the caller’s phone rings to let them know the call has been connected.

Members can dial a local number provided by Jaxtr to reach friends or family overseas, without having to keep returning to a computer to manage their account.
