Following its successful launch of IPTV in the Czech Republic, O2 is now turning its attention to the UK.
O2′s UK service will be similar to its offering in the Czech Republic, which has attracted 70,000 subscribers since September 2006.
The Czech Republic has a population of just 10 million, with broadband penetration of 12%, whereas the UK’s broadband penetration is 24% of a population of 60 million.
O2 plans to start rolling out test subscriptions in the UK, in 2008, over its Be ADSL2+ network, despite rival services, such as BT Vision, failing to meet targets. O2 acquired Be Broadband last year.
If the trial proves successful, a full commercial launch could follow by the end of 2008.
Despite slow uptake of IPTV in the UK, industry experts believe that it is an essential service for broadband providers, helping them to retain customers who might otherwise move to an alternative provider with IPTV in their offering.
