Consumer panel urges Ofcom to act on broadband speeds

by David Allen

Ofcom is being urged by its own consumer panel to get tough with the UK’s broadband service providers with regards to the speed that consumer has signed up for and the sped that they are actually receiving, as there would appear to be a huge a variance from one to the other.

The panel are looking for all sorts of rules and regulations to be entered into a mandatory broadband service provider code of practice. This will create a level playing for all consumers no matter where they are or what service they have signed up for and once and for all remove the difference between the speeds that the companies say that they can give you and what consumers actually get.

If this went ahead it would mean that the broadband supplier would need to contact the consumer after the installation was completed with an exact speed of upload and download rates, if this was unacceptable the customer should be able to walk away with no penalties.
