Intel focusing on business PCs for the home environment
by Janet Harris
Intel announced new processors designed to make PCs smaller and more efficient, at CES 2008 in Las Vegas.
The company’s vision is for the Internet to become more personal and interactive, as is already happening with electronic devices such as set-top boxes which can connect to the Internet without the need for a traditional PC.
In his keynote speech, ‘The internet is personal’ Intel’s CEO, Paul Otellini, said that he expected the Internet to continue to transform the consumer electronics industry, with interactive web services a key part of the transformation.
As part of this vision, Intel is developing new mobile platforms to help people connect wherever they are. Otellini demonstrated its forthcoming ultra-mobile and handheld devices powered by the company’s Menlo platform.
The company also sees computers moving away from the office and into the home and its new range of 16 processors will be better equipped to become living room devices.
They will all use the 45nm fabrication process. Intel will focus on enhancing video support in its desktop chips, while the notebook processors will be more energy efficient. All of the chips will be lead-free.
The company is rebranding its Viiv specification for CPUs with innovative multimedia capabilities, such as the ability to receive downloads while in low-power mode. Viiv was originally designed as a specification for multimedia-specific PCs.
