The battle for IPTV begins
by David Allen
There have been many battles within the media industry, but the one that will be the war to end all wars is about to begin, 2008 will be the year that the big guys of UK media roll up their sleeves and slog it out until only one is left standing.
Yet it was way back in 1999, when Kingston Communications launched the first IPTV service, it was different then though, because by the year 2010 revenues from the global IPTV market are expected to reach a massive £6.5 billion, which is why 2008 is so important.
The first main service will be “Kangaroo†this is a joint service between C4, ITV and the BBC, where programmes will be available on demand, with thousands of hours of viewing material. But it is the battle between Virgin Media and BSkyB that will sort the men out from the boys; these two companies will be either strike up a deal or fight to death in 2008.
