One million Christmas viewers for BBC’s iPlayer

The BBC’s newly-upgraded iPlayer catch-up service captured one million unique viewers between 25 December and 7 January 2008. More than 3.5 million programmes were viewed over the Christmas period.

The Doctor Who Christmas special proved to be the most popular programme.

The BBC’s target was 500,000 viewers in the first six months of operation.

The updated version of the software enables viewers to stream programmes, as well as providing compatibility with Macs and Windows Vista.

Significant numbers of users selected niche-interest programmes, with more than half of the programmes viewed falling outside the Top 50 most-watched shows. The top 100 most streamed shows featured a number of programmes from digital-only channels BBC Three and BBC Four.
