Microsoft shows how you can avoid the forced IE7 upgrade
by Alan Harten
Microsoft has revealed a set of instructions aimed at administrators who wish to avoid the forced upgrade to version 7, the latest version of Internet Explorer, , due to be launched on the world on Feb 12.
Microsoft’s software update service for businesses users of Windows Server Update Services, or (WSUS), who currently use Internet Explorer (IE) 6 will be upgraded automatically to IE7 on Feb 12th, the people at Microsoft announced this on its manageability team blog last week.
It has now come to light that, this can be avoided: “if WSUS is not configured to “auto-approve” update rollup packages,” stated JC Hornbeck, Microsoft “manageability knowledge engineer in his latest blog posting.
This advice, which is available with full details on Microsoft’s support site, can only be applied to users who do not want the upgrade from IE6 to IE7, and whose computers are based on Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Server 2003 SP1.
So users of Windows Vista are tied into IE7, as it is a component of that operating system.
