Sharp announces 1.5 inch LCD TV
Sharp is launching its new X-series line of LCD TVs in Japan on 1 March. The sets are just 3.44 centimetres at their thinnest point.

LCD TV manufacturers are producing thinner TVs by reducing the thickness of the backlight. Sharp has also separated the tuner unit into a VCR-sized box.

Sharp’s X-series range includes a 37-inch model for ¥350,000, a 42-inch for ¥430,000 and a 46-inch for ¥480,000.

They are designed to be wall-mounted, providing a neater appearance than larger sets on the market.

An optional wireless video transmitter, which works on proprietary Sharp technology, is also available to further enhance the appearance of the set-up.

This can replace the HDMI cable which links the tuner unit with the set. The only cable then attached to the set would be the power cable.

Sharp plans to sell the sets in overseas markets but no details are yet available.
