Birmingham to get the young online
by David Allen

A senior Birmingham City Councillor, Les Lawrence whose remit is for children, young people and families, is calling on internet service providers to help families who are having problems affording a fast internet service for their children. This as we know could be holding them back from getting on at school and therefore could affect their future.
Nationwide figures show that there are over 800,000 school children who are without any internet access at all, and although they are able to use it a school this really is not good enough.
Birmingham City Council will be providing a laptop to two thousand school children, and by the end of the summer year they plan to give out another six thousand laptops. This has been made possible through the universal home access programme which gave the council a £5.7 million grant.
