Dell and Microsoft plan Product (Red) PCs
by Janet Harris
Dell and Microsoft are collaborating on a range of PCs, as part of the Product (Red) programme.
The programme was founded by Bono the lead singer in U2, and philanthropist Bobby Shriver. It comprises a group of companies which donate some of the proceeds from certain products towards research into Aids in Africa.
Dell’s Product (Red) PCs will come with copies of Microsoft’s Windows Vista Ultimate operating system. The range will include Dell XPS One PC, M1330 and M1530 notebooks and the 948 printer.
Contributions to the charity from sales of the products will range from $5 for the printer to $80 for the XPS PC.
Dell and Microsoft join several other big names already involved in Product (Red), including Apple which has produced a line of (Red) iPod Nano players for the charity since late 2006.
Other partners include Converse, Gap, Motorola, Emporio Armani, Hallmark, and American Express (UK only).
Since the charity was launched in March 2006, (RED) has contributed over $57 million to the Global Fund, which fights Tuberculosis and Malaria, as well as Aids.
