New call for licence fee share
by David Allen

By the time that the digital revolution has finished in 2012 the BBC will have a virtual monopoly on regional news, this has lead to calls from various organisations for the BBC to share part of the licence fee among some of the competing channels.
Regional programmes may only make up a small percentage of the total amount of programming on both the BBC and independent TV too, but what programmes are made are deemed to be very important to the people who live in these areas, the switchover to digital TV is being seen as a direct threat to these programmes.
There is talk of around five per cent of the licence fee being given to the regional TV programme producers, with an estimated £3.9 billion coming from the licence at that time, this is indeed a fair amount of money to be handing out to the regional’s, who also get advertising revenues.
