According to industry sources, the launch of the new X48 chipset from Intel has been pushed back to mid March, with surplus stocks of the X38s being cited as the cause for the two month delay.

Details for new X48 motherboards have already been announced by some makers, such as Gigabyte Technology and Micro-Star International, however due to Intel’s hold on the launch, the motherboard makers have to wait until mid March to start shipping the new products.

Sources state that Intel has confirmed that there will be no further delays. The launch of the Core 2 Extreme QX9770, supported by the new X48 chipset, will also be held back until mid March.
