French company, Archos, is launching a Wi-Fi-enabled digital set-top box in the UK.
The Archos TV+ set top box is a Digital Video Recorder which can record TV programmes and can also stream files from a PC to a TV set.
With the addition of the Opera browser, a user can surf the web on a TV screen using the supplied Qwerty remote – no PC is required.
TV programmes can also be synchronised with the Archos Portable Media Player for mobility.
The DVR records TV programmes in VGA format (640 x 480), and does not currently support HD. However, DRM-protected WMV and WMA audio and video files are supported.
The TV+ also has a USB port for transferring photos from a PC or digital camera and viewing them on the TV screen.
The Linux-based Archos TV+ will be available in the UK for £179.99 for the 80GB version and £249.99 for 250GB. The Opera browser costs an extra £19.95. The MPEG2 and H.264 codecs are come as plug-ins for which there is an additional charge.
