O2 to introduce FemtoCells

The mobile phone operator O2 has joined up with the Japanese firm NEC and Swindon based Ubiquisys to put together plans for a trails of the device know as a femtocell, this trial is the prelude to a full launch of the product sometime in 2009.
A femtocell is base station that can be placed in the home or office through which mobile phone operators can offer their services, such as bundled fix line telephone, mobile internet roaming and mobile phone services too, this can be done because the box acts as a mini mobile phone mast but is situated in the home and therefore the signal is brilliant.
O2 are not the only company interested in this product, all of the big four are said to be excited about this device so Sky, BT or Carphone Warehouse’s Talk Talk will no doubt offering a similar opportunity to their customers in the near future.
The femtocell is said to be the next big thing to happen within the telecom industry and something like this that offers a complete service and more is going to be in great demand.
