Dell and ECS win prize for mobile broadband notebook

The GSMA who represent the worldwide mobile industry, have announced that Elitegroup Computer Systems, ECS, and Dell have worn its mobile broadband notebook competition.

The intention of the prize is to broaden interest in the marketplace for notebook PCs that have embedded mobile connectivity. The GSMA believe that there is a massive market for such a device that may be worth as much as $50 billion this year and would ship as many as 70 million units.

The organisation did identify a problem with this market. In that it felt it was essential that the notebook would be able to retail at less than $1000, some sceptics felt that this is not the practical retail price.

But it seems that ECS and Dell have been able to come up with the goods at the right price Dell has produced the Inspiron 1525, which was the winner of the best commercially available mobile broadband notebook ECS on the other hand, came away with the prize for best free commercial mobile broadband notebook named, the uninspiring, G10il.

A steering committee that consisted of nearly all the big operators such as Vodafone, Telefonica and O2 also gave recognition to Siemens for its Esprimo V555.

The GSMA is leading a number of initiatives this year that are aimed at stimulating mobile computing use, all supported by the big names in mobile computing, these initiatives are aimed at enhancing the user’s experience and making it much easier to access services and applications such as entertainment and communication.
