January Brings Mixed Results For Taiwanese Mobo Makers
by Rohan Parker
It is mixed results for January sales for three Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers. Whilst Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) have had a fall in earnings for the month, both Gigabyte Technology and Micro-Star International (MSI) have had marked gains.
MSI announced their figures for January, showing a total net of NT$9.54 billion (US$301 million), which is an increase of 15.19% against this time last year, due to their success in the notebook market.
The stats for Gigabyte in January are showing very large growth for the company, with a net of NT$5.69 billion, which raises them by 41.1% against this time last year. The company has shipped a total of 1.99 million motherboards and 430,000 graphics cards for the month.
The books didn’t look so good for ECS, who experienced a reduction of 19.12% compared to sales last January, still netting them a tidy NT$7.3 billion. The drop is due largely to the delay in shipments by of ECS’s notebook clients. ECS shipped 1.98 million motherboards last month, though this is a drop of 3.64% from January last year.
At this stage, ECS are predicting another drop of 10-15% on motherboard and notebook shipments, however in late March those figures should start to turn around.
