Ever since the BBC introduced the iPlayer on Christmas day there has been a barrage of complaints from the internet service providers (ISP’s) and to be fair to them you can see why. When some downloads a half hour TV programme it use around 300 Mb’s, while a programme which last an hour will use around 600 Mb’s, so its quite easy to see where things can go wrong for the user and the ISP.
Since those subscribers are on around 1 Gb down load limit they could be soon pushing the boundaries, out of interest for one hours surfing the net the user would clock up around 20 Mb’s, the comparison between downloading and surfing is huge, and it would see that not many users understand that.
There has been talk from the ISP’s as to who is going to pay for this extra usage and as normal it will probably end up with the users paying for the extra bandwidth used. Eventually there is going to a change, there are already measures in place for ISP’s to limit users or to turn down the speed on users who regularly go over a reasonable level of usage.
