Southampton University in €18 Project to develop robust technology
by Janet Harris
Computer scientists from the University of Southampton’s School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS), are involved in the €18m DEPLOY project, which aims to make technology more reliable and robust.
The project covers five technology areas - transportation, automotive, space, telecommunication and business information.
The project aims to build resilience into technology, making it less susceptible to malicious attacks.
Researchers are using mathematical models to analyse designs. This should help to eliminate errors before technology systems are put together.
As well as scientists from the University of Southampton, the project involves academic partners from Newcastle University, University of Dusseldorf, ETH (Zurich) and Aabo Academy (Finland).
The academics will collaborate with five industry partners - Siemens, Bosch, Space Systems, Nokia and SAP.
Formal engineering methods will be used to analyse the resilience of each system, which will then be refined in an industrial setting.
A pilot scheme will be run in each industry sector, in which the technology will be tested and run for a year before being produced commercially.
