New guidelines for unsuitable material
by David Allen

There are growing concerns for the nine o’clock water shed, which some may say has no real relevancy in today’s digital age and even with this in place the parameters are being pushed all of the time. In guidelines drawn up by the government’s watchdog the Broadband Stakeholders group broadcasters and website will need to “Flag Up” material that is deemed to be unsuitable for children.
The guidelines have been endorsed by the BBC, Channel Four, Bebo, Google and Yahoo this system if you can it that will enable everyone to know and to see what content is not suitable for children on the internet, mobile phones and TV.
But the people in the front line, parents, are not too sure that something as simple as a warning is actually going to stop younger people from viewing this content, whether it is violent, pornographic or something else, but even if there was a large pop up window that appear at the start, this may not have any effect. After all if you are surfing the net and come up against a pop up that said “Do Not Enter” some are bound too click yes.
