BBC iPlayer usage increases rapidly
by Alan Harten
The latest statistics from the BBC indicate that the number of downloaded programmes or OnDemand streamed programming via iPlayer has now passed the 17 million mark, or up to half a million a day.
The Beeb states that daily volume figures have become very steady since the Christmas Day launch of iPlayer last year, just last week for the first time, it pushed through the 500,000 barrier.
During the month of January, slightly over 2 million viewers watched programming on the iPlayer with an estimated 11,000,000 TV shows downloaded or streamed on demand.
The most popular programme watched online or downloaded was Ashes To Ashes other popular programmes were Life In Cold Blood and England Vs Wales in the Six Nations tournament.
.
The new iPlayer is also having a great impact on other BBC sites where an average of twenty million people a week now visit www.bbc.co.uk, in January, that was an increase of just under 30% in visitors compared to January 2007, the BBC believe that the main cause of this increase is the iPlayer, which accounts directly for over 1.3 million visits per week.
Visits have also increased since the BBC made its content available on Yahoo, they also intend to add Blinkx. and MSN in the very near future.
Along with these good statistics, the BBC also announced they have new updates for the iPlayer, these include a list of the ten most popular streamed programmes, as well as ‘Last Chance’ and ‘Recently Added’ sections which are updated six times an hour.
