A new workstation motherboard has been released by Asustek. Titled the Z7S WS, the motherboard is designed for workstations and comes with dual 771 sockets, the latest Intel 5400 chipset, totally buffered DDR2 800MHz dual-channel memory as well as dual PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots and all neatly packaged in CEB format.

What is peculiar to the Z7S WS is the unique new heat-pipe design, which is intended to actually increase thermal capacity, whilst emitting less heat in the first place, which will give the motherboards a longer life span and make them more durable than the heat sink design the industry is accustomed to.

This new design, dubbed the MemCool kit by Asustek, will lead to higher FB-DIMM performance and less risk of losing memory to over heating. This will in turn reduce the energy needed for SIs to target thermal and acoustic problems.

The exact specifications for the Z7S WS have been released by Asustek and so far we are looking at a processor which will support a two Socket LGA771 dual-core Intel Xeon 5100/5200 or alternately a quad-core Intel Xeon 5300/5400 with FSB up to 1600MHz. The chipset can be an Intel 5400 Memory Controller Hub (MCH) or an Intel ESB2E I/O Controller Hub (ICH). It will have a CEB form factor and memory capabilities of 6 slots (4-channel) DDR2 800/667/533 memory support up to 24GB.
