Dell enters rugged laptop market
by Janet Harris
Dell has entered the rugged laptop market with its new Latitude XFR D630, placing the company in competition with companies such as Panasonic.
The Latitude XFR D630 meets Department of Defence MIL-STD 810F standards, which determine whether equipment is military grade. The standards cover Drop, Shock, Vibration, Enclosure, and Temperature categories.
Dell claims that the Latitude XFR D630 is the best rugged laptop on the market, and even states on its website that the machine provides 23% greater performance than Panasonic’s CF-30.
The Latitude XFR D630 has a 14.1 inch widescreen LCD display with optional touchscreen. It has an up to Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.2Ghz, 4MB L2 Cache) processor, up to 4 GB of thermally enhanced DDR2 RAM, an Intel X3100 Integrated graphics chipset and optional solid state hard drive.
Other features include integrated GPS and draft-n wireless, fingerprint reader and trusted Platform Module 1.2 chip.
The laptop is encased in a solid die cast magnesium alloy chassis with magnesium carry handle, and weighs a substantial 8.9lbs. It costs around $3,899 for the bast unit.
