Hauppauge and DivX are collaborating on a device to rival Apple TV. The player will be based on the DivX Connected platform, and will allow consumers to deliver media from their PC and the internet to a TV, including high-definition videos.
The player will offer consumers streaming videos, photos and music stored on a local hard drive. Users will be able to access internet services and plug-ins showcasing a wide variety of content.
The device will be based on an open platform, with a developer API allowing anyone to create a plug-in for their favourite internet service.
Hauppauge expects the device to be available in the second half of 2008. Pricing details have not yet been released.
Ken Plotkin, President of Hauppauge said “Hauppauge, through our WinTV product line, is the leader in bringing high definition TV watching and recording to PCs. We are excited to offer our consumers a DivX Connected box which will play high definition recorded videos in the living room. DivX Connected offers our customers an open platform that can accept plug-ins, which will expand the types of media which can be played on a TV set.”
