PlayJam via Freeview coming from Static
by Lin Freestone
Static is planning to launch a PlayJam branded PlayBox to deliver the world’s largest interactive games portal via digital terrestrial broadcast for the first time. PlayJam will be available to digital terrestrial viewers via Static’s sister company Electra Entertainment, and requires less than 1% of the bandwidth needed by other middleware solutions. PlayJam’s Playbox will offer the 40 available channels via Freeview, in addition to a seven-day TV listings guide, news, DVDs, puzzles, gossip, reviews, weather and travel. Deals are currently being agreed with Freeview set-top box manufacturers. The PlayBox is expected to retail for about £20 when it launches later this year. Since its launch five years ago, PlayJam’s 800 plus games have logged more than eight billion downloads. They are already available in over 55 million homes across the world via Sky in the UK, Dish TV in the US and India, Sky Italia, Multichoice in South Africa, UPC in the Netherlands and Astro in Malaysia.
