Microsoft have admitted that their patch for Excel, released on March 11th, has been causing problems and they have released an update to fix it.
Microsoft spokesman Tim Rains said ‘The original version released on 11 March did fully protect against the security issues discussed in the bulletin.
‘However, after release we discovered that the security update caused a calculation error in Microsoft Excel 2003 when a Real Time Data source was used in a user-created Visual Basic for Applications solution (in other words a custom-built VBA function).’
The original patch was rated ‘critical’ for Office 2000 and ‘important’ for the other operating systems affected (Office XP, 2003, 2007, and Office for Mac 2004 and 2008).
It was intended to fix a vulnerability which could allow attackers to execute codes remotely on the machine.
The weakness is linked with the way in which Excel files are processed, and potentially might enable an attacker to gain control of the target system.
It manifested itself in the form of a ‘Real Time Data’ error message which appeared on installation of the patch when users tried to use Excel with Office’ VBA software.
The new update is available on Microsoft’s Automatic Update site.
