Smart Telecom, the second largest provider of residential, corporate and SME telecommunications services in Ireland, is planning a soft-launch in April for its DSL-based multi-channel IPTV service in the 37 unbundled exchanges in which it currently offers broadband.
The soft-launch will begin with selected customers closest to exchanges, or who are on the smaller copper loop closest to the exchange. Once the company is happy with the quality of service, a general rollout will begin across the country.
Smart is planning to invest $4m in a MPEG 4 IPTV headend and middleware solution from French provider, Thomson. The new platform will allow Smart to deliver more than 100 TV and radio channels to an addressable 550,000 homes across Ireland.
The company will rollout its high-speed symmetrical business broadband packages for the SME and corporate markets designed for domain transfer, web hosting, email, IP address, videoconferencing, VOIP and enhanced upload requirements. This will be similar to the residential product launched recently.
