Blu-ray penetration figures predicted

Now that the format war is done, according to a report by the Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices Services, Blu-ray hardware penetration will rise to nearly 30 million homes worldwide this year.

The calculation is that overall 18.8 million Blu-ray units will be sold in 2008 which breaks down into four million stand-alone set-tops, 13 million PlayStation 3 consoles and 2 million PC-based Blu-ray drives.

“HD DVD’s withdrawal leaves the way open for Blu-ray to become a major revenue earner for technology vendors and content owners alike”, said David Mercer, principal analyst at Strategy Analytics.

“The 265 million homes that will own an HDTV by 2012, and Hollywood’s need for a new growth engine, represent huge incentives for the industry to coordinate marketing activities and demonstrate unified support for the successor to DVD.”

  1. Yeah, cos regular people are just itching to pay out over x10 - x20 the price of DVD on players & movies for a very marginal benefit.
    Not.

The real title of this ought to be -
‘More paid research in an exercise of tedious predictability says what the paying (BDA) customer wants it to in an effort to mould public opinion’.

The consumer electronics corps are just looking for higher margins, that’s all.
Pity few outside of the PS3 game console set could care less.

  2. I don’t agree. The costs will drop quickly as more people come in. I’ve just bought a Sony standalone Bluray player. Special offer because I bought a TV of £149. I then found out that registering it on-line got me 4 free Bluray films. I have also found a website with about 40 Bluray films at 2 for £18 and quite a few more at under a tenner.

There is a significant improvement in picture for Bluray on my 1080p TV. Its about to take-off and 30 million is pretty conservative imho.
