Writer and comedian Ben Elton has accused the BBC of being scared of any material that makes fun of Islam. He explained that although the BBC have no problem with making fun of a vicar, such as the very funny Vicar of Dibley, but if there was an idea for a similar programme which made fun of an Imam, then it would be a different story altogether.
The comedian was being interviewed for the Christian culture magazine Third Way, where he said that he believes that the BBC are genuinely scared of upsetting the Islamic authorities and communities, as we have seen in the past with certain films, plays and programmes.
He may have a point that BBC are over politically correct, but they are in position where if they commissioned a programme which was sensitive then they could be causing trouble only for the corporation, but in around towns and cities that have high percentages of ethnic minorities. No matter who says what this is a very delicate subject.
