Carphone Warehouse may bid for Tiscali
by David Allen

It hasn’t taken long for possible bidders of the Italian owned telecom company Tiscali to come forward. It has only been a short while since the management of Tiscali announced that they have brought in bankers to help them work out the best options for the business, whether that is selling all or part of it will not be known.
Carphone Warehouse as become the forerunner but probably only for the UK arm of the business. Naturally at this stage there will be many potential suitors but at the end of the day it will be only the one who feels that they are getting a good deal for the estimated 1.7 million UK based customers of Tiscali that will buy.
There are some figures of around £550 million to £650 million being bounced around, which may be a little high for the Carphone Warehouse; after all they paid AOL £370 million for their UK operation with a customer base of 2.1 million.
If all else fails there are a couple of other businesses that may be interested in taking on Tiscali UK, they have to be BT and Sky, although if it come down to these two it is more than likely that BT would not be drawn into a bidding war.
